You may need a new boiler in Derby for a new property such as a self build or in an old property, that has never had central heating and you are upgrading the whole heating system.
It can be a little daunting trying to decide which make, model, type and power level of boiler to choose. However, our experienced Gas Safe Registered engineers can quickly narrow down the best system and the power level you need based a a few fairly straight forward questions about how you intend to use your hot water and the number and size of the rooms you have.
Finally when they've narrowed what you need down then depending on your budget you can review the options from the different manufacturers. This is where your budget may impact what make you go for but our heating engineers will only recommend boilers which have a good track record such as Worcester Bosch Boilers, Vaillant Boilers, Ideal Boilers, Baxi and Viessmann Boilers. There will definitely be one for your heating, hot water needs an budget.
Whilst there is is growing debate of getting a new gas boiler due to the government announcing plans to phase out installing new gas boilers into new properties. For homes which have always had a gas central heating system the use of gas will still be here for a few more decades yet.
Whilst new home will be using systems such as air or ground source heat pumps or combinations of other renewable sources of energy to retrofit a completely new heating system into existing properties is not going to be feasible in the short to medium term.
The gas network is extensive across the UK and the likelihood is that eventually hydrogen will be substituted for gas but this will mean that new gas boilers from 2025 onwards will be designed to run off either gas or hydrogen. The biggest issue will be changing which of them is actually routed into your property. It is likely such changes will need to be done 'on mass', so if your are looking at getting a new gas boiler there is absolutely no need to worry as this will be your most cost effective option for heating and hot water.
There are three main types of heating and hot water systems and choosing the right one will depend on a few factors such as the size of your house, number of rooms, number people in your house and when they are active in the house.
Regular boilers have a few different names, sometimes they can be referred to as 'traditional boilers' or gravity fed heating. It is probably the most common heating system in the UK and as one of the name suggests it uses gravity to move warm water around the house. Clearly to do this the hot water needs to come from a height which means that the water tank in the loft will feed the hot water cylinder will generally be located in a special little cupboard upstairs - just for the tank. This all-in-one tank and boiler - 'regular boiler' should be well insulated to keep the water warm so that it does not continually need re-heating, which would not be energy efficient. Similarly if someone uses a large amount of hot water on one go this will mean waiting for the cold water to heat up which means a little forward planning may be required.
Since gravity is the power for pushing it isn't great for people wanting a mains 'power shower' but this doesn't mean an additional pump can't be installed to aid the pressure circulation. Many systems have opted for the additional pump as it makes a significant different to the enjoyment of hot water usage.
With many new small starter homes and apartments being build the number of new combi-boilers being installed has been significant over the 20-30 years. These are very economical for small households such as couples living in a semi or terraced house or bungalow and ones where people's schedules are irregular.
For new homes a new combi boiler is a relatively smaller cost for the house developer but also can be a great option for keeping heating bills low for the householders. The main difference between a regular boiler and a combi boiler is that there is no need to have a water tank. For smaller homes where space is a premium losing space for a water tank isn't particularly appealing - so rather than heating water to be then held in a storage tank, water is only heated when it is needed - in other words it switches on when you turn on the hot water taps. Similarly when you have the timer set to heat your home the system turns on and start to heat and circulate water around the radiator system. Depending on your area some combi boilers can be run through the mains water pressure, which will allow more powerful hot water for a shower but if not good results can be achieved with a good pump.
It is relatively simple to connect your heating to a smart controller so you are in full control of your boiler to have everything coming on only when you need it.
The name combi is an abbreviation of 'combination' which refers to the fact the single boiler powers both the hot water and heating but it doesn't do both at the same time. If you are using hot water the demand for this will temporarily stop heating your radiators until the hot water is off again. In a similar fashion if you have having a shower and some else turns on the water or even flushes a toilet this will impact the water pressure in the system, which in turn will effect the water temperature in the shower. If you are the only person living in the property then clearly this will not be an issue and therefore is an ideal boiler for a single person home. For couples it still can be easy to be aware of each others activity but for larger households this can prove to be quite impractical and the source of family feuds!
If you are thinking of a new system boiler in Derby you will be looking at one of the larger boiler and heating systems which is ideal for large households with large families. The system combines aspects of a combi boiler and the principles of a regular boiler set up to deliver the best of both worlds.
Like a regular boiler you will need to allocate space to cater for a large hot water cylinder. This will enable hot water to be used by more than one person at the same time without suffering the same extreme changes you would get with a combi boiler system. Unlike a regular boiler the system boiler operates on what is known as a closed loop system so like a combi boiler it takes in mains water and heats it up. It heats up the cylinder so you have access to a tank's worth of hot water so you can access hot water from the tank while the boiler can focus on heating the radiator, so unlike a combi boiler where you can only have hot water or heating at one time with a system boiler you can enjoy both!
Replacing your boiler is unfortunately something, which when the time comes, is an expense which is necessary to get on with everyday life in your home. It can be a more serious issue if your boiler does decide to finally call it a day in the winter months. That is why almost every gas heating engineer will recommend a regular annual boiler service to advice when a boiler replacement should seriously be considered - to prevent the scenario of being without heat or hot water reasonably soon.
Whilst there is no exact figure of when you should replace your boiler there are some analogies to a car. Generally speaking a well known manufacturer, with a good reputation for making some good models will mean that your vehicle, or boiler in this case, will last longer as better parts have been used in it's construction. The other factors will be how hard has it been worked? Again a likening to how many miles has your car on the clock. The harder a boiler has been worked to more wear and tear it will generally undergo. However, this shouldn't be confused with the fact that the more efficient a boiler is running, meaning it is running harder.
To at least start anticipating or preparing for the fact that you may need a replacement boiler soon if you know the age of your boiler is getting near to, or surpassed, 15 years.
The other aspect to consider is that whilst your boiler may still be working it will be running at a much lower efficiency level than when it was first installed and this should also be factored into your decision of when to replace your boiler. If your gas heating engineer states that your current boiler is running at an efficiency rating of 'G' then it is at the lowest rating level compared to the 'A' rating which you will get with a new replacement boiler.
If you are also using an older thermostat with an old boiler it would make sense to have a discussion with our engineers about what other factors can help you keep you ongoing hot water and heating bills down. Collectively you could look to save around £350 per year which starts making a boiler replacement a more attractive proposition.
So, we've given some indications of what a boiler replacement in Derby could provide in terms of annual savings on your bills. This is a smart way of looking at costs as it provides a was to look at net costs and even provides a break even point for your investment in a new boiler. Yes - we used the term investment as your boiler is possibly one of the most important machines in your home. It is important to you living comfortably in your home and it has an increasing importance when looking to sell your home. Not least having a boiler service history but having a reasonable new, reputable boiler will be viewed favourably by potential buyers who are getting much more savvy when it comes to minimising heating bills.
At the point of replacement it really does make sense to think about you whole heating strategy and protecting your new boiler. If you haven't already got thermostatic radiator controls (TRVs) installed this will allow you greater control of the heating room by room - or more specifically radiator by radiator. In a bigger household these are especially useful so that if you have members of your family who have irregular living patterns - such as being away for days or weeks at a time their room's TRV can be sett really low or off so that you are not spending money heating an empty room. By the same token it does allow individuals to set their own room temperatures which for bedrooms in particular will enable each member of your household to get a better nights sleep according to their temperature preferences.
At the same time as fitting your replacement boiler fitting a filter such as a MagnaClean will help
keep your heating system clean which in turn helps your boiler and radiators heat up more efficiently. Finally looking at at a mobile thermostat, that is connected to a smart controller will allow you much more control and the ability to make heating and hot water adjustments quickly for almost anywhere in the world - so if you forgot to turn your heating off when on holiday "don't sweat it" you're in control!
Not really. Whilst a plumber could install a boiler only a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer can commission a new boiler. Commissioning a new boiler is a mandatory requirement to ensure that a new boiler has been installed to the required safety standards. Whilst a qualified heating engineer can commission someone else's work should he designate that the installation is unsafe then you will find yourselves in an awkward position. Either you then need to have the Gas Safe Engineer correct any issues to make the general heating system safe, which will cost you more money. Clearly you could recoup this from you plumbers fees so if you do take this approach we would advise that you agree to pay your plumber only once your system has been certified. Hopefully you can see why it is better and safer for your boiler and heating system to be installed by a qualified heating engineer in the first place.
We are always a little reluctant to single out any particular manufacturer as some different makes have better performing models at one power rating over another. Aslo your budget may also mean that you may not be able to stretch to the top brand such as Worcester Bosch. In the heating enginewe world base on installation experience and customer feedback the lesser known brand Viessmann boilers has proven to be an excellent performer across a wide range of models but is not as expensive as Worcester Bosch.
Whilst there is no fixed timeframe for when a boiler should be replaced the are some tell tale signs and typically a lesser known brand will generally not perform as well or for as long as some of the leading brands. However, if you know that age of your boiler is at least 15 years then it is likely that its efficiency will have dropped. If you are having to have more frequent repair this is also an indicator. If you are having your boiler serviced you should ask your boiler service heating engineer to let you know what efficiency level it is working at and therefore what impact this has on our heating bills.
Whilst the government has announced that new gas boilers will be phased out in from being installed into new build homes from 2025 the reality is that with most of the UK having gas boilers it will continue to be the main form of heating for many years to come. Whilst hybrid gas boilers will become more popular from 2025 allowing the boiler to work from hydrogen or natural gas the reality of changing the network feed from gas to hydrogen is a massive undertaking so if you are requiring a replacement gas boiler any time soon this will still be your most cost effective option.
