Whilst servicing your boiler can sometimes seem an annoying expense when everything seems to be working correctly it can be likened to your car undergoing its MOT/Service. You may be able to drive your vehicle but there may a be potential hazard or wear and tear of a component which would only be picked up in a service, which with a simple replacement will protect more expensive damage from occurring.
Our Gas Safe Engineers have carried out hundreds of boiler services, so when it comes to servicing your boiler you are in safe hands. It doesn't matter which type of gas boiler you have whether it is a combi, regular or system boiler we can service the lot. As part of our boiler service we ensure your boiler manufacturers warranty is kept valid and will also provide you with an update on how efficiently your boiler is working.
When we are there we always like to encourage you to talk to us about how you think your heating and hot water is performing and if there is anything you have noticed. Quite a common issue fed back from homeowners if that there may be one or two radiators in a home, that are not performing as well as the others. This will be a 'radiator balancing' issue and not related to having a problem with your boiler. However, we can assist with pressure adjustments and making small adjustments to other radiators to balance your system and help improve the individual performance of those problem radiators.
When we carry out boiler servicing in Derby there are a number of check performed on your boiler. Some of which may seen quite trivial but they all make a difference in the performance of your boiler.
One of the first things we check is whether or not the safety devices related to your boiler door are functioning correctly. If there is noticeable damage resulting in a poor fitting or the interlock switches to the door have become dislodged we will correct those. Home safety is a primary focus of a gas boiler service so the pipework is checked for any possible leaks, should any be found this is a priority fix which will simply involved replacing the section of pipe which is leaking with new pipework. This is especially important for pipework and its insulation in and around the boiler itself, with any faults noticed being replaced.
The emissions coming from your boiler will be tested as will the flow coming from you boiler flue pipe with a meter. This will highlight if there is a some sort of blockage. If your heating system has flue dampers this will also be checked for performance, as faults here can lead to emissions of carbon monoxide which will clearly need repairing immediately. The valves in your boiler will be check, and again if any fault is noticed, depending on the issue, it will be repaired or replaced.
Boilers are designed to perform best within certain water and gas pressure ranges. If these are out, our heating engineers will make the necessary pressure adjustments. Within the boiler unit the wiring, safety devices and the thermostats will be checked, if there is noticeable wear which may soon lead to a failure this will be replaced as a preventative measure. If you do have any filters fitted these will be removed and cleaned before replacing to ensure they continue to protect your boiler as much as possible.
Following any repairs or replacement the boiler is finally put through a pressure test. This is a mandatory part of boiler servicing which it needs to pass before a gas safe engineer will commission it as safe to use. When it passes we will stamp your warrant book, protecting your manufacturers warranty and give you a full rundown of our findings.
When you arrange for gas boiler service the following gets checked .
* boiler door safety devices are working correctly. Incorrectly fitted, damaged or missing door interlock switches are included in this check.
* all gas pipework is checked for leakages using a soap solution and then an ignition source. Any leaks found are repaired by removing the section of faulty pipe work and threading new piping into place.
* boiler casing is checked for any signs of cracks or corrosion. All pipework insulation is inspected and replaced if required.
* flue pipe work is tested with a damp meter to make sure there are no blockages between the appliance and chimney . A carbon monoxide detector can be installed inside the house in case of leakage.
* gas boiler valves are checked for correct operation with a small amount of coloured water added to the gas valve. Valves that fail this test are replaced or repaired.
* flue dampers (if fitted) are checked for any signs of overloading which could lead to carbon monoxide emissions . Any faults found during this check are repaired.
* water pressure and temperature are tested to make sure they are within the correct range for the boiler's design .
* all electrical components (such as wiring, thermostats and safety devices) are checked for wear and tear. Worn out parts are replaced if found during this check.
* gas boiler service is completed with a boiler pressure test. This is to prepare the appliance for a gas safety inspection, which has to be done before it can be used again.
Once your gas boiler service is complete and everything has been examined and serviced to ensure that it passes your warranty book will be stamped giving your peace of mind that your boiler is working as economically as possible and your manufacturers warranty is still valid.
A Magnaclean filter is a filter that helps with the removal of sediment and rust from water. This can be harmful to boilers as sediment and rust both interfere with the efficient operation of your boiler and Magnaclean filters remove this issue by removing these unwanted elements. Boilers operate by using heat and pressure to convert water into steam which can then be used to heat your home. However, if sediment or rust are allowed to get into the boiler it will interfere with this process and cause heating bills to become more expensive due to the fact that the boiler has to work harder in order for you to receive hot water. It also prevents corrosion and other damage MagnaClean filters are relatively cheap and easy to maintain which makes them an excellent investment for your boiler. The MagnaClean filter is an easy installation, and are also compatible with most boilers, which means that you do not need to replace your entire boiler in order link one of these to you boiler and heating system. We can fit a MagnaClean filter as part of a boiler service as this will protect your boiler and improve radiator performance and moving forward cleaning it would become part of your annual boiler service keeping your system running smoothly.
Across the UK boiler service costs will vary depending on the region your are in. For example in the capital a combi boiler service will be around £200, with system and regular boilers around £150 fortunately in Derby a boiler service cost will be around half that amount. For a commercial boiler service we will quote based on having a better understanding of your heating system, its size and location will potentially effect the cost to service the boiler and system appropriately.
If your boiler is a few years old and your central heating system has not been cleaned for a while then scheduling a power flush at the same time will work out cheaper if we do at the same visit. Please let us know if this is you intention, or you are considering this at the time of booking you boiler service as this will need to be factored into our schedule and total price.
Not really. Whilst a plumber may know, or think they know how to service a boiler only a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer should service a boiler. This will also be a condition of your warranty too.
Even if you are a landlord whose property has been unoccupied for a while you should have your boiler serviced as recommended by your manufacturer to protect your warranty. Almost all manufacturers recommend doing this on an annual basis, which is good practise and is relatively inexpensive, especially as this practice is likely to result in only minor repairs if any issue is identified at the service before more comprehensive damage is done to the boiler requiring a replacement boiler.
Signs that your boiler may need servicing include unusual noises, such as banging or gurgling, which can indicate a buildup of pressure or sediment. If you notice a decrease in heating efficiency or an inability to maintain consistent temperatures, it may signal underlying issues. Additionally, leaking water or the presence of rust or corrosion around the boiler can be red flags. A noticable increase in your energy bills might also suggest that the boiler is working harder than it should be, signaling the need for a check-up. If you experience a yellow pilot light instead of blue, this could indicate incomplete combustion, which requires immediate attention to ensure safety and efficiency. Regular servicing can help prevent these issues from escalating and extend the lifespan of your boiler.
Boiler servicing includes a comprehensive inspection and maintenance process to ensure that the boiler operates efficiently and safely. This usually involves checking the boiler's pressure, examining the flue for any blockages, and inspecting key components such as the burners, heat exchanger, and safety valves. Additionally, our heating engineer will clean parts of the boiler, check for leaks, and test the system's gas pressure. Servicing will also include reviewing the system's controls and safety features to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
